Box pleat kilt 4/5 yards
A light kilt with a touch of history. The pleats are folded into “boxes” following 18th-century tradition, as seen in many paintings of the period. With less tartan it suits summer and informal occasions. It is made to measure, with no length limits as with casual kilts.

Ordering a made-to-measure kilt in 4 steps
1. Choose your tartan
In the Fabric field above the Add to cart button, choose the mill and the fabric weight. The Tartan field will then offer the tartans currently available from that mill.
- Marton Mills – heavy weight Jura range, medium weight Bute range; selected patterns are also in our swatch book
- Lochcarron – heavy weight Strome range, medium weight Braeriach range
- Poly/viscose – Marton Mills Balmoral range (a lighter, more affordable cloth)

2. Take your measurements
The kiltmaker needs three required measurements (A–C). Height and weight are optional and only used as a check. You enter everything right on this page. Measure in centimetres, ideally with someone to help you. See our kilt measuring guide for details.

3. Enter your measurements and add the kilt to the cart
Fill in the Your measurements fields above the Add to cart button. If you would like matching flashes (garter flashes for your kilt hose), choose them in the Flashes field. The chosen tartan and your measurements are attached to the order automatically – there is nothing else to write.
4. Measurement check and production
Before the kilt goes into production we check your measurements. If anything looks wrong, we will contact you by e-mail. The kilt is ready in about 3 months.
Frequently asked questions
I am not sure about my measurements. What should I do?
Write to us at david@kiltforyou.eu before ordering. A finished kilt is very hard to alter and a good kilt lasts a lifetime, so it is better to ask first.
What is a box pleat?
Modern kilts use knife pleats, which all face the same direction. On a box pleat kilt the pleats are folded into boxes, the way kilts were pleated in the 18th century. For the classic look, see our 8 yard kilt.
Can a made-to-measure kilt be returned?
The kilt is made exactly to your measurements, so under EU consumer law it cannot be returned within the 14-day withdrawal period. The statutory warranty for defects of course still applies. That is why careful measuring matters.
Kilt fabric
The kilt can be made from three fabrics:
- wool 16 oz – heavy weight, approx. 335 g/m²
- wool 13 oz – medium weight, approx. 280 g/m²
- poly/viscose 11 oz – light weight, approx. 240 g/m², the most affordable option
Wool kilt tartan has a special weave and a selvedge finished so that it does not fray even without hemming.
