Scottish thistle plaid brooch

Thistle Plaid Brooch

This brooch is inspired by Celtic fasteners that were used to secure clothing as early as the Iron Age. Between the 8th and 10th centuries, Scottish and Irish craftsmen developed their distinctive shape into a richly decorated accessory that is both practical and majestic.

The large open ring is complemented by a fixed central pin and finely detailed Scottish thistle motifs. The thistle has been a national symbol of Scotland since at least the reign of James III, representing both the beauty and the resilience of the Scottish landscape and its people.

Measuring 124 × 80 mm, this brooch makes a striking impression on fly plaids, shawls and wraps. Traditionally, it can also serve as a decorative weight that helps keep the plaid securely in place.
